Drug trafficking by sea is increasing

April 18, 2017 by Staff News Writer

At least 3 boats were caught transporting drugs last week. However, so far this year, the Ministry of Security already counts the capture of 5 tons of cocaine, 325,000 marijuana plants and millions of colones in cash.

Nevertheless, authorities estimate that about 2,400 tons of cocaine will pass through Costa Rican territory, which is twice the average when compared to 2016.

Cocaine comes mainly from Colombia and marijuana enters the Caribbean from Jamaica. During 2016, national authorities seized 24.5 tons of cocaine.

According to Minister of Security Gustavo Mata, this situation is a consequence of the expansion of the crops in South America, as well as the modernization of the plantation system.

To fight this situation, Minister Mata stressed that international cooperation is a key point. Costa Rica, Colombia and Panama lead a battle block against organized crime.

The National Coast Guard Service expects to invest $ 10 million in operational equipment: a patrol boat and 4 speed boats to pursue drug trafficking boats.
