El Salvador is fed up: criminal gangs have killed 44 police officers

November 21, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The government of El Salvador has announced a plan to closely combat gangs that have increased attacks on police. They have killed 44 officers this year.

A specialized group will be created in order to pursue, find, capture and put in the toughest conditions to all members of criminal organizations that threaten families and members of the National Civil Police (PNC), Armed Forces and threatens the public security.

The last two victims of these attacks were a policeman and his son who were shot and killed on November 16th outside their house. The officer’s wife was injured in the attack.

In the last two weeks, 12 policemen and three soldiers were killed by gang members.

PNC director Howard Cotto said that among the Nemesis plan’s measures, it is included the development of “investigative processes” and a greater “presence” in areas where the “criminal structures” are. There is also an administrative measure to “benefit” killed officers’ families.
