El Salvador is going through a new seismic swarm

April 24, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Salvadoran Ministry of Environment (MARN) reported that 34 tremors in San Salvador and its periphery has caused alarm but not casualties in the population.

The “reactivation” of the seismic swarm, according to a statement from the MARN, occurred on Saturday morning and until Sunday, it accumulated a total of 34 earthquakes, out of which 7 have been felt by the capital’s population.

The earthquakes went from 2.5 to 3.9 degrees in Richter scale. However, due to their small depth (2.45 and 5.0 km), they caused concern in the population.

The tremors, which are caused by the activation of local geological faults, have their epicenter in the municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlán, about 10 km west of San Salvador.

Environment Minister Lina Pohl, told AFP that the first seismic swarm, from April 9th to April 18th, accumulated 537 tremors, out of which 54 were felt by the population.
