Eroticism and social struggle: the bases of the San José Diversa festival

June 4, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The San José Diversa Festival started last Friday with the aim of celebrating sexual diversity. For this third edition, the central themes are eroticism and “Los imparables’’ (the unstoppable), a slogan that refers to the struggle for the rights of the LGBTI community.

Workshops, talks, outdoor activities, and other programming started on June 1st and will continue until June 10th in different spaces, including La Alhambra, Teorética, Las Moiras, and Parque Francia, in San José.

Janekeith Durán, representative of Political Advocacy at the Front for Equal Rights (FDI), which organizes the activity, indicated that the events are free and open to the public of legal age. Some of the programmed activities are a workshop on pornography and others on bisexuality. On June 3rd there was a talk called “Sex in public spaces?” And on June 7th there will be another talk on toxic relationships. The complete program can be consulted at www.sanjosediversa.com.

The National Restoration Party, from the Legislative Assembly, launched criticism against the organization of this festival, as it was against morality. However, the organization says that they are not affected or surprised that this religious political group opposes events that do not respond to their interests.

The Front for Equal Rights described as the statements coming from this political party as bullying.

The activities of the San José Diversa 2018 Festival invite us to speak in an open and respectful way about topics that for many people are taboo, such as the experience of sexuality and eroticism. We believe that it is essential that as Costa Ricans we begin to have more open positions on these issues, and that respect for the diversity of all people be promoted,”

said Michelle Jones, representative of the Front for Equal Rights.
