January 7, 2014 by Staff News Writer

It is the duty of every police wear his bulletproof vest. | REBECA ARIAS

Each of the 14,000 officers with the Fuerza Publica in Costa Rica are equipped with their own bullet proof vest, according to Security Minister Mario Zamora. Equipping each officer with a vest, boots and replacing revolvers with 9mm pistols became a priority in 2007. All officers in San Jose now have 9mm pistols and the remaining areas should be equipped before the end of the year. Zamora now looks to the task of replacing the communication system with a modern digital system that will encrypt police radio traffic.
