Exporting fruits is an opportunity for national growth

July 11, 2019 by Staff News Writer

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), exporting tropical fruits is an opportunity for growth in Costa Rica. The OECD report states that the country is using this potential through a link in export markets and the internal promotion of fruit trade, through farmer’s fairs, among other markets.

In Costa Rica, exports of tropical fruits represent approximately one third of all agricultural export earnings. In addition, Costa Rica produces bananas, pineapples, papaya and an extensive list of other tropical fruits, which together total approximately 150,000 hectares established nationwide.

This activity has promoted the development of fruit production chains and has created new sources of income and employment for thousands of agricultural producers, and other actors in the chains, as suppliers of inputs and services,”

the report indicates.

Some of the advantages of Costa Rica in the fruit market is the proximity to the United States, one of the largest markets and also the sustainable models that are used to produce.
