Extraordinary vaccination against measles to be carried out by the CCSS

December 18, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Measles is a very contagious and serious disease transmitted very easily through drops from the nose, mouth and pharynx of infected people, which is why it’s so important to have good vaccination campaigns. Therefore, the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) proposes an additional vaccination day for next year.

Doctors of the Immunization Program of the Fund estimate that about 10% of children who are vaccinated every year are not protected against this disease, so it is necessary to carry out the extraordinary vaccination from time to time.

Leandra Abarca, coordinator of the Program, explained that this group is joined by the number of parents who do not vaccinate their children for the anti-vaccines trend, without knowing the serious damage they are doing, not just their children, but to the general population.

This campaign seeks to reduce the amount of susceptible population and raise awareness of the importance of vaccination. It is the only way to reduce the risk of serious complications caused by this virus, including blindness, encephalitis, severe diarrhea, ear infections and pneumonia.

The Institutional Immunization Commission will schedule the extraordinary vaccination, financed by the Fund. The initiative arises due to outbreaks that occurred in previous years in European countries, which generates an increase in the possibilities of transmission.
