Farewell crowd for Luis Alberto Monge

December 2, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Hundreds of people outside the Metropolitan Cathedral said their goodbyes to former president Luis Alberto Monge, who died last Tuesday because of a cardiorespiratory arrest.

After completing the State Funeral, many citizens stood in front of the Church to applaud the former Costa Rican leader during the period from 1982 to 1986.

The religious ceremony lasted 2 hours and was attended by the President of the Republic, Luis Guillermo Solís, the First Lady, Mercedes Peñas, and government officials.

Former presidents Óscar Arias, Rafael Ángel Calderón, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez and José María Figueres were also present.

Monge’s body will be cremated. His ashes will be buried in the Earth in Guácimo and his heart in Palmares, next to his mother, according to his will.
