First month of VAT gave the Treasury 76.6 billion colones

August 23, 2019 by Staff News Writer

This Thursday, the Ministry of Finance presented the results of the first month of implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT), which left the government a revenue of 76.67 billion colones.

The total presented in tax corresponds to 130 billion colones, but due to the tax credit, which is the difference between the VAT that the taxpayer collected and the one paid, almost 80 billion net colones are obtained.

In addition, the Treasury indicated that 84% of taxpayers filed their July tax return and 360,000 tax returns were received.

Rocío Aguilar, Minister of Finance, clarified that the remaining 16% of taxpayers have not evaded the declaration, but they adhered to transitory VIII of the law, which allows them to present the declaration in September.

The Minister described this first month of implementation of the new tax as “very successful” and she estimates it will generate an additional collection of 0.76% of GDP in one year.

The figures presented by the Treasury are cut to August 20th.
