Foreign Ministry claims it had no information about domestic violence in Chinese embassy

February 10, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Foreign Ministry prefers not to take sides and wait for “a communication” to intervene in sensitive issues such as violence against women.

The Ministry won’t hold the Chinese embassy in Costa Rica to account until it has “knowledge” of an alleged case of aggression committed by the cultural attaché of the embassy against his wife.

The alleged events would have occurred last Friday night in Escazú. The Public Force and the Municipal Police of Escazú were involved.

The woman was transferred to a private medical center in the area, but she did not file a complaint against the man. Apparently, he took her to the hospital himself.

The communication sent to the press adds that

it must be borne in mind at all times that ambassadors and diplomatic representatives accredited in Costa Rica, in accordance with the Vienna Convention, enjoy diplomatic immunity.”

The article quoted by the Foreign Ministry points out that

the diplomatic agent will enjoy immunity from the criminal jurisdiction of the receiving State. It will also enjoy immunity from its civil and administrative jurisdiction.”
