Former presidents support Christiana Figueres

July 21, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Former Costa Rican presidents sent a letter to President Luis Guillermo Solís in which they expressed their support and satisfaction for the Government’s decision of nominating Christiana Figueres as Secretary-General of the U.N.

The letter was signed by Luis Alberto Monge Álvarez, Óscar Arias Sánchez, Rafael Ángel Calderón, José María Figueres, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, Abel Pacheco and Laura Chinchilla Miranda.

We are aware of the national effort needed to achieve this goal. Only together we can choose an exemplary, decent and worthy Costa Rican woman to be the leader of the United Nations. Therefore, we support this great decision and we join this national effort,

quoted the missive.

Currently, the Costa Rican candidate is visiting China, France and Spain.

Christiana Figueres met Christian Masset, International Secretary General of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development, in order to request his support. Figueres stated that there was a productive exchange on important issues such as peace, security, human rights and climate change.

There is one day left before the first voting process is held at the U.N. headquarters in New York.
