Franchises generate almost 30,500 jobs in Costa Rica

July 18, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The franchise sector generates some 30,469 jobs in the country, both for franchisees and franchisors.

In total, in Costa Rica there are 361 brands of this type, 81 of which are national.

In fact, the sector has had a growth of 141% in the last ten years, according to the National Franchise Center. Currently, 14 of the local brands have begun their expansion process to 12 countries, including Panama, Guatemala and Honduras.

The franchise model in Costa Rica is very successful and its development in recent years shows it, both the emergence of new franchises internally, and others that come from other countries,”

said Karol Fallas, director of the National Franchise Center.

The food sector is the one that concentrates 47% of the businesses of this type, followed by services, shops, education and fashion.

Only in 2019, the domestic market has registered seven new brands.

A franchise is a consolidated business model so it minimizes the risk of possible bankruptcy. It consists of a business owner (franchisor) making the use of his trademark or business available to a third party, and in return he pays him for that commercial exploitation.
