Gerald Murray is driving a referendum to promote medical cannabis

November 16, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Advocates of medical cannabis have a goal: to promote a referendum in the coming months.

They made a formal request to the Supreme Electoral Court in order to have the authorization and start collecting signatures.

The initiative is driven by Gerald Murray, a 33-year-old man who aims to be the presidential candidate from Partido Unión Social Cristiana in the elections of 2018.

Murray expects to have the magistrates’ endorsement before the holidays.

The politician declared that this is the last option they have for the progress of the initiative since some legislators are against the proposal. They have already presented 3 different texts to the Congress.

Murray admitted that he knows that time is against them since they have to collect 150,000 signatures. The law states that a referendum must take place 6 months before the election: it means that the deadline will be August, 2017.
