German national led methamphetamine traffic via mail

March 13, 2018 by Staff News Writer

A German national, resident in Costa Rica, is listed as the alleged leader of an organization that sent and received drugs via mail. The Deputy Prosecutor’s Office against Organized Crime (FACDO) confirmed that the subject – whose name is Unmuth Kohler – was arrested in Sabana Larga, Atenas.

Apparently, the gang is linked to the shipment of methamphetamine crystals that are then distributed throughout the national territory. This product comes from different countries in Europe, including Germany.

A Costa Rican named Víquez Hurtado was arrested next to the German, who presumably collaborated with recruiting people with no criminal records to pick up the packages in post offices. A third individual, surnamed Méndez, would have collaborated with the withdrawal of multiple drug packages. He is now in prison for another criminal case.

According to the investigation, which began in February 2017, Unmuth has contacts abroad that supply methamphetamine crystals to be marketed in the national territory. These illicit substances are sent through postal services,”

explained the FACDO.

Those who remove the packages know what the contents area, so they are instructed to act with caution.

On December 27th last year, some 26,000 doses of ecstasy were sent from Germany to Costa Rica through an airmail package. The press office of the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) reported that the shipment -made through a private package company- was removed by a man named Torres, who was arrested as part of the investigation.

The two cases might be related.
