Germans condemned for insect trafficking but will not go to jail

March 12, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Two Germans identified as Daniel Goldnik and Detlef Ollesch were sentenced to five years in prison by the Criminal Court of Flagrancy of Alajuela after being found guilty of committing a crime against the Wildlife Law, however they will not go to jail as they received the benefit of execution of sentence.

The foreigners were arrested on February 11th when they tried to leave the country with different kinds of insects such as spiders and ants.

In a press release, the Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that the Deputy Prosecutor for Environmental Affairs got an expedited conviction against the two foreigners.

The Court granted them the benefit of execution of the sentence, which means that they will not spent time in prison. However, it was established that if the accused commit a crime in our country, during the term of the sentence, the benefit will be revoked and they will go to prison. In addition, the Interpol and Europol were informed of the sentence, so they activate an alert each time the accused enter a country.”

Ollesch had 354 containers with different species of ants, spiders and a scorpion; while Goldnik had 35 bottles with ants.
