Feria Trueque Limpio (Clean Barter Fair) is the name of a campaign led by the Municipality of Golfito, dealing with the exchange of recyclable material for agricultural products: fruits and vegetables.

This activity was held last Thursday for the first time and it’s supported by the Board of Regional Development of the Southern Zone (JUDESUR) with the participation of volunteers.

Ana Azofeifa, head of Institutional Marketing at JUDESUR, explained that the Environmental Management Department of the municipality promoted the fair.

We are trying to receive all reusable material, so that it won’t end up in the gulf, green areas or even backyards,”

said Azofeifa.

The locals can bring cardboard, plastic, glass, carton, scrap metal and electronic waste. For every kilo of recycled material, people receive 5 points that can be redeemed for 1 kilo of agricultural products.

The first edition gathered 3,636 kilos.

The next Clean Barter Fair will be held on Thursday, October 27th, in Golfito dock. Azofeifa recommended bringing clean materials, since there are volunteers who separate them and others who transport them to a collection center.

According to official data, 14 tons of waste are generated daily in Golfito, and only 1.3% is recycled, hence the importance of the fair.
