Government and unions resumed meeting to solve fiscal differences

September 24, 2018 by Staff News Writer

On Monday afternoon, the unions and the Executive Power resumed negotiations to try and end the national strike of public employees. The unions are opposed to the tax plan that is discussed in the Legislative Assembly. The movement has been active for 15 days now.

Both parties met on Monday at the Archbishop’s House, in downtown San José from 3:00 p.m.

The unions went with the intention of being able to convince the government to include the legislators in these negotiations. The Executive Power demands the strike to be called off to open the discussion of the fiscal crisis, while the unions demand the withdrawal of the fiscal plan from Congress.

Steven Núñez, Minister of Labor, admitted that there are antagonistic positions , but defended the need for a fiscal reform and the project under discussion. Gilberto Cascante, leader of the National Association of Educators (ANDE), said the discussion should be held in the Legislative Assembly.
