Government decrees National Day of Biosphere Reserves

July 10, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Beginning this year, the country will continue to celebrate November 3rd as National Biosphere Reserves Day, in recognition of the importance of these territories in the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.

The decree, signed by President Luis Guillermo Solís and Édgar Gutiérrez, Minister of Environment and Energy, also includes provisions on the organic structure for the integral management of these zones, which will be in charge of families, producers and environmental organizations.

The country has four Biosphere Reserves: La Amistad Talamanca, Central Volcanic Cordillera, Agua y Paz and Savegre.

In addition, these communities were ordered to form Local Biosphere Reserves Management Committees, which will be bodies for advice, planning and coordination of resources.

The management of Biosphere Reserves will be carried out with budget of the different public institutions involved in this process, as well as non-governmental organizations.
