Government says there will be no political assessments for therapeutic abortion

January 22, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Executive Power said on Tuesday that there will be no “political assessments” in the technical standard that President Carlos Alvarado will sign this year to regulate therapeutic abortion, or induced abortion for medical reasons.

This issue is being addressed directly by the Minister of Health (Daniel Salas), who is responsible for the technical and legal analysis of the issue and we are not talking about political assessments,”

said the Minister of Communication, Nancy MarĂn, at a press conference after the Government Council.

The minister offered the statements after being consulted on the reaction of the Executive Power before the approval of a motion so that the president refrains from issuing or expanding by decree the technical norm for the application of article 121 of the Criminal Code, related to therapeutic abortion.

The motion was approved on Monday with 27 votes in favor and 26 against.
