Group hopes to collect 170 thousand signatures for new Constitution

January 6, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Following the authorization given in December by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal for the collection of signatures to allow a referendum to convene a Constituent National Assembly, the group New Constitution Costa Rica began the process of collection.

The target is 170 thousand signatures, representing 5% of the Costa Rican electoral register, which would allow the TSE to organize the referendum.

Volunteer groups will collect signatures in all corners of the country in the shortest possible time to lighten the processes.

The idea is that the collection of signatures is completed in a period of 9 months to present them immediately in court.

For months there has been an awareness campaign in the country on the need for a new Constitution, which has come to universities, citizen groups, communities, business associations, labor organizations, the cooperative sector and solidarity groups.
