Guatemala held 64 migrants from Afghanistan, Congo and Cameroon

February 18, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Guatemalan police held 64 migrants from seven countries, most of them from Africa and Cuba. Authorities suspect they were going to the United States, after entering through the border with Honduras.

Police spokesman Jorge Aguilar told reporters that the foreigners were located at kilometer 230 near the border with Honduras called Agua Caliente, east of the capital of Guatemala.

There are 20 migrants from the Congo, nine from Cameroon, four from Angola, six from Afghanistan, four from Eritrea, seven from Haiti, and 14 from Cuba. However, Aguilar did not specify their gender or age.

The migrants did not carry documents, so they were transferred to a shelter of the Migration Directorate in the capital while they carry out the deportation process.

Guatemala is on the path of Central American, South American, Asian and African migrants seeking a way into the United States.
