Guatemalan President’s brother arrested for corruption

January 18, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Wednesday, the Guatemalan Police arrested President Jimmy Morales’ brother, who is linked to a corruption case that also involves the President’s son.

Attorney general Thelma Aldana told the press that Samuel Morales, known as Sammy, was arrested for alleged involvement in fraud with a food contract for the General Property Registry.

An arrest warrant was also issued against José Morales, one of the four sons of the President. But because they cannot pave the Presidential House, the prosecution sent him a notice to appear in Court.

The contract for breakfast for 564 people for about $12,000, paid by the Land Registry without becoming a reality, is part of an investigation on the creation of phantom seats uncovered last September 1st with the arrest of the former director of the Land Registry, Anabella de León.

Days after the capture of the former official, President Morales announced that their relatives had rendered their statement for being sprinkled in the case.

Sammy is the closest of the three brothers of the President, because for over 15 years they co-produced the TV show “Moralejas” (Morals), by which he is remembered by most Guatemalans.
