Hass avocado’s price could go even higher

July 7, 2016 by Staff News Writer

If the price for each Hass avocado seems too high now, it might cause surprise that it will increase again, since Mexico recorded a decline in production.

According to the Mexican business magazine Expansion, the price of this fruit rose about 90% during the first half of the year, because they already finished the largest harvest, mainly in Michoacán, the state responsible for almost 80% of the production throughout the country.

A recently completed harvest is called “old” because it began nearly 10 months ago and there are still products available; whereas the “new harvest” was delayed as a result of the rains. This delay in the harvest could also impact international prices, as other suppliers may perceive pressure on demand.

Suppliers from Mexico report (…) a shortage of avocado, due to weather effects. The pressure from the U.S. market is likely to increase the price a bit,”

said Randall Benavides, president of the Cámara de Exportadores e Importadores de Productos Perecederos de Costa Rica.

Although Mexican avocado’s price may rise, Benavides said the cost is still lower than importing from Peru or Chile, so he insists on the need to reopen that market. However, Costa Rica now explores the Dominican avocado market for future negotiations.
