Health alert over fake medicine from Mexico

December 1, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Ministry of Health launched an alert due to the sale of a fake drug from Mexico. The drug is also sold in Costa Rica, but here there are no reports so far.

The Directorate for the Regulation of Health Interest Products received a statement from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) explaining the alert of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks of Mexico (Cofepris).

The drug is the “Krytantek Ofteno” which contains the active ingredients dorzolamide, timolol and brimonidine. It is indicated for the control of intraocular pressure in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, with ocular hypertension and in some cases secondary glaucoma where more than one drug is necessary to achieve the target intraocular pressure.

The laboratory in charge of manufacturing it was the one to denounce the presence of a product that imitates it, but that does not contain the active principles according to the analysis made to some samples.

According to the Ministry of Health, in Costa Rica the medicine”Krytantek Ofteno Sterile Ophthalmic Solution” is registered for sale in pharmacies under medical prescription. There are no known cases of counterfeiting of this product in our country but it is necessary to be alert to any irregularity.

It is important that people acquire medicines only in establishments that have a Health Operating Permit and that any irregularity be reported to dac.denuncias@misalud.go.cr or go to the nearest Health Rector Area .
