Health unions might go on strike

February 14, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Union of Professionals in Medical Sciences (SIPROCIMECA), UNDECA, and the Medical Union, warn of a possible strike call in coming days, due to their disagreement with the negotiating table for the draft Law to Strengthen Public Finances.

According to Marvin Atencio, general secretary of SIPROCIMECA, last Monday, the health unions had a meeting with the Minister of Planning and other government officials, to read and discuss the draft that will regulate the recently-approved law and its scope.

However, the unionist states that they were only shown four articles that were related to unemployment, annuities and promotions. Atencio said that they were called to a “meaningless” meeting because the Executive Power would had already drafted the document without their contribution.

Next Friday, they will meet the executive president of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), Román Macaya, and all the Boards of Directors of the unions. Of course, Atencio anticipates that the meeting will not “last more than an hour”.

If the unions do not agree with the draft regulation, that same day they could make the decision to convene Extraordinary Assemblies and then issue the strike call.
