Heavy wash forecast for beaches of the Caribbean

February 8, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Yesterday, Playa Cocles had a heavy wash. This phenomenon will not only occur on the beaches of the South Caribbean, but also on those found throughout the Caribbean coast, from Tortuguero to Manzanillo, as confirmed by Omar Lizano, from the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology at the University of Costa Rica.

According to Lizano, the intensification of the trade winds will cause an increase in the waves. According to the expert, the waves could reach up to four meters in height. Therefore, the authorities warn bathers, coastal residents, and small boat operators to take precautions, since the forecast is that the phenomenon will continue until next Thursday.

Moín and Cieneguita will also be affected. According to Lizano, in this area, loss of coastline and beach and erosion problems are occurring. It is expected that the houses that are nearby, may suffer with flooding.

Regarding the road infrastructure of Playa Cocles, the Director of the Port Maritime Division, Jorge Hernández, confirmed that there is no major damage to the national route 256 and that everything goes smoothly.
