Hepatitis A alert will be extended for several more weeks

July 30, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Health Ministry will maintain the alert due to an outbreak of hepatitis A in Guadalupe for a month and a half after the end of the symptoms for the last case detected, since that is the maximum incubation period of the virus.

Last week Health reported that there were five confirmed cases and seven cases pending confirmation, which were controlled and located in two or three streets of the canton from San José.

Daniel Salas, head of Health Surveillance, emphasized the need to wash his hands constantly, but also, to do it well.

How to protect yourself from hepatitis A?

The most important thing will be washing your hands before eating, before preparing food, after going to the toilet, and after changing diapers. This measure must be highly rigorous in people who are responsible for preparing food, especially in places of public consumption,”

said Salas.

Another important recommendation is that infected people do not go to work or to their place of study for at least 12 days, because this is the most intense period of the virus. At home, infected people must remain in one place so as not to expose others to contagion.

Where there has been vomiting or diarrhea, it must be disinfected to avoid contagion. They should try to consume food in places with sanitary operation permits, because that means they have an essential capacity and infrastructure to reduce the risk of diseases,”

explained Salas.

People who are infected should be aware and not go to other places. Also, after 12 or 14 days they must continue with intense hand washing to avoid infecting others.
