Honduras proposes initiatives to neighboring countries in the face of suspension of US aid

April 1, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Honduras proposed to Guatemala and El Salvador to evaluate the creation of joint initiatives to ensure the sovereignty and dignity of each nation, given the suspension of US financial assistance, in a statement released by the Foreign Ministry.

In relation to the contradictory policies of the United States government agencies and the different branches of the State, Honduras proposes to the neighboring countries of El Salvador and Guatemala, that while the internal disagreements on regional cooperation are resolved, they jointly evaluate the initiatives in the Northern Triangle, ensuring the sovereignty and dignity of each nation, “

said the statement released on Sunday.

The administration of Donald Trump cut financial aid to the three Central American countries, accused by the US president of “doing nothing” to prevent migrants from traveling to the United States, a State Department spokesman announced Saturday.

The Honduran Foreign Ministry said that, beyond the suspension of aid,

it has become clear that the bilateral relationship between Honduras and the United States has been characterized by being solid, close and positive.”

He recalled that the desire of the United States to continue to strengthen the bilateral relationship with Honduras was reaffirmed last week when President Juan Orlando Hernández met at the White House with Security Advisor John Bolton, and the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen, visited Tegucigalpa.

The State Department has not specified how many unexpended funds were actually affected by this measure, which could be mainly symbolic.
