December 12, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Are you passionate about astronomy? On December 13th, 2018, the Cientec Foundation will tour with the company Calypso Cruises, to see the Geminids, which are active from December 4th to 17th. The phenomenon reaches its peak at 6:30 am in Costa Rica.

The Geminids will be the last meteor shower of 2018 and will have the best conditions of the Moon and weather.

The tour begins with a trip through the Glofo de Nicoya, followed by the Punta Coral private reserve, with astronomical guides, access to observation instruments and a dinner under the stars. The activity will begin at 4:30 p.m., departing from the Aurola Holiday Inn, San José.

Punta Coral is a private reserve with a dry tropical forest. It is the most outstanding eastern point of the Nicoya Peninsula. It has access only by boat and has a quiet beach that will be the point of observation of the phenomenon, it is located in front of Isla Negritos Biological Reserve.

The tour includes land and sea transportation, food, observation guide, printed materials and access to instruments. It is recommended to bring binoculars, cameras and a towel or sleeping bag to lie on the lawn. The tour will go back to San José at 2:30 am.

The name of this meteor shower comes from the region from which the meteors seem to radiate, near the head of Castor, one of the twins of the Gemini constellation. In 2017, there were periods of more than one meteor per minute.
