May 23, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Improving the health service offered to some 104,000 Costa Rican indigenous people is the objective of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS).

On Tuesday the institution announced the creation of a new professional profile, for the staff that will be in charge of assisting to this population.

The creation of the indigenous community assistant comes hand in hand with equipment and improvement in the time of visiting the territories. Investment in infrastructure is greater than ¢3 billion. The mobile equipment to be purchased aims to improve the diagnosis and therapy actions for these people.

The indigenous community assistant will promote health and disease prevention, said Maria del Rocío Sáenz, Executive President of the CCSS.

The construction of eight periodic visit posts in different indigenous territories is also underway.

Costa Rica has eight Indigenous Peoples that live in 24 territories. Among the main health problems of these populations are high death rates due to preventable infectious diseases, acute respiratory diseases, and acute diarrheal diseases, among others.
