Indigenous culture inspired 100% Costa Rican videogame

October 13, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Indigenous culture: its legends, beliefs and history were the breeding ground for a 100% Costa Rican videogame.

“El camino de Useköl” (the path of Useköl) is the name of this brand creation from the cultural products company Juegos Ditsö, which works to publicize the richness of legends and beliefs of the peoples of Costa Rica in an attractive, entertaining and innovative way .

Jonathan Marino and Nancy Camacho form the couple who created the video game. In total, seven people worked on the development of this project. The Omar Dengo Foundation collaborated with programming, while the music was provided by a Costa Rican band of tribal metal, call Totem.

This project is in the beta stage (test), with Level 1. It’s a strategy and adventure game, which takes place in the forests and territories of Costa Rica, where magic and mythology combine in Talamanca , Guayabo and Delta Diquís.

The creators were able to develop this idea thanks to the financial support granted by the Propyme Fund, from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Telecommunications (MICITT) in 2015.

Players have the choice between two characters (female and male), named Tanu called Siarke. In addition, they get to choose the mythological characters that will help them win battles and complete missions.

The characters have to explore a number of locations throughout the game and face challenges such as solving problems, collecting objects and battling legendary beings of Costa Rican indigenous mythology.

This trial version is available from October 12th. Those who want to try it just have to follow a dynamic that will be published by the creators in official Facebook pages of the game: Game Ditsö and UsekolVideojuego.
