Industries: “The strike call is unpatriotic”

September 6, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Chamber of Industries of Costa Rica rejected the call to strike by the union sector for next Monday, and the rest of the week, and described the attitude as unpatriotic, irresponsible, and disrespectful on the part of the unions.

Enrique Egloff, leader of the group, said that the behavior of the unions is disrespectful to the President, the Powers of the Republic, and therefore the people of Costa Rica. He also stressed the importance of approving the tax reform in Congress.

The representative of the businessmen insisted that the disrespect of the unions is demonstrated by not having accepted the invitation of the President of the Republic to talk and call off the strike.

There are sectors looking after their own interests, instead of worrying about the national interest and the welfare and stability of all Costa Ricans. The unions are behaving in an unpatriotically and irresponsibly because they are only concerned with protecting and defending their privileges that we all pay for. It is time for us to understand that if we do not end the privileges, they will end Costa Rica,”

explained Egloff.

The businessman also pointed out that

the country is faced with a time bomb regarding the fiscal problem and the unions have the audacity to tell the President of the Republic, in a disrespectful way, that if the negotiations don’t meet their demands, they will continue to strike. That is manipulation and disrespect.”

Egloff explained that a fiscal crisis would affect the humble people of Costa Rica in the worst way.

If we do nothing, next year’s deficit will be almost 8% of GDP, interest rates will go up, the colon will be devalued and if at this moment families are struggling to pay their debts without the tax reform, they will be unable to pay by then,”

said Egloff.
