Infinito Gold did not attend Edgardo Araya’s trial

November 18, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Representatives from the mining company Infinito Gold did not attend legislator Edgardo Araya’s trial, who was accused in 2010 for the alleged crime of defamation.

Araya, legislator from Frente Amplio (FA) who waived his immunity in 2014, arrived to the Third Chamber to start the process. However, the plaintiffs never went.

As reported by the FA through its official Twitter account, representatives of Infinito Gold were notified in advance. Apparently, one of the company employees is abroad and did not appoint any legal representative.

The legislator was sued for near 500 million colones. Araya, a lawyer by profession and resident of San Carlos, was one of the strongest voices against the establishment of the mining project in Crucitas de Cutris.

Infinity Gold has already filed complaints against 4 other people. However, the company lost two cases and abandoned 2 processes,

declared Araya in front of the Constitutional Court.

In February 2015, the Third Chamber ordered to stop the process against the legislator. However, the legislature asked to continue with it.
