Inflation hit the gas in July

August 9, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Last July a bigger change in prices was perceived by Costa Ricans due to an increase in the cost of fuel.

The cumulative inflation in the seventh month of the year rose to 0.94%, a number substantially higher than the 0.01% shown in June.

According to figures released by the National Institute of Statistics and Census, from the 315 goods and services included in the basket of goods, 49% increased in price last month, while 42% experienced a price reduction and 9% remained unchanged.

Goods and services that show a greater positive effect are gas, electricity service and tomato. On the other hand, eggs, avocado and green beans are among the ones which experienced the most negative effect.

When analyzing the percentage changes in the twelve groups’ prices that comprise the index, it shows that the transportation group is having a greater effect on the variation of the general index.

In the last five years, the only negative cumulative percentage change from January to July 2015 was a -0.35%.
