Irazú Volcano Lake is increasing in volume

March 18, 2018 by Staff News Writer

After it disappeared completely several years ago, Irazú Volcano lake now shows a tendency to increase its volume.

This was explained by experts from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), who pointed out that it is the new lake that began to emerge in the main crater of Irazú in September.

On March 15th, the lake had a bluish coloration, indicating the presence of colloidal-sized particles suspended in a column of clear water that is not being disturbed by convection, which means that there is no significant underwater activity.

According to scientists and locals, the main crater lagoon had dried up in 2013. This lagoon is one of the main attractions of the colossus and since last February the entity reported that the water level increased by one meter.

The cold lagoon, as it is popularly known for its temperature, reappeared through the rainy conditions prevailing in September last year and has remained so since the beginning of this year.
