Italian man hid marijuana in works of art

An Italian tourist was surprised at the Juan Santamaria airport with paint impregnated with marijuana.

The Drug Control Police officers (PCD) arrested the foreigner who came from Oaxaca, Mexico, and headed for Montezuma, Puntarenas.

The foreigner is surnamed Smaniotto, 41, and carried two wooden boxes in a suitcase whit the the drug.

The paintings were of flowers and gazelles. According to the Ministry of Security, the works had a sticky substance that caught the attention of the authorities. The substance tested positive for marijuana.

In addition, a trained dog from the Canine Unit confirmed the suspicions.

Smaniotto was transferred to a Criminal Court in Alajuela, where he remains awaiting precautionary measures.
