Juan Santamaría International Airport is operating despite Turrialba’s volcanic activity

September 22, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Juan Santamaria International Airport maintains its regular operations, despite the major eruption of Turrialba volcano, that has been recorded since the early morning.

However, according to authorities, supervision and monitoring are constant due to the possibility that the wind carries the ash to Alajuela.

Turrialba’s volcanic activity forced authorities to cease the airport operations several times, which affected the arrival and departure of more than 100 flights and hundreds of people. Operations were resumed on Tuesday.

The latest eruption was classified as “the strongest in 20 years.” It reached 3000 meters high.
