Judicial authorities spying on journalists

January 20, 2014 by Staff News Writer

Leaked Report No.13-000115-1219-PE file.

Journalists from the newspaper La Extra have announced that they have leaked documents from the judicial branch of government, which prove investigators have conducted surveillance of journalists and intercepted their telephone records. According to the documents, agents responsible for investigating organized crime and narcotics trafficking were responsible for the espionage.

The news report does not explain how agents obtained phone records, but denounces the practice as contrary to international law and as representing an unprecedented threat to the practice of journalism and the rule of law in Costa Rica.
