Landslides keep Mora canton on tenterhooks

September 14, 2016 by Staff News Writer

For several weeks, the attention of several emergency institutions is focused on the canton of Mora.

On September 1st rains caused 4 hectares of land in Quitirrisí to collapse, causing the eviction of 20 families in the area of Quebrada Honda.

On Tuesday there was a landslide in Guayabo de Mora that kept 4 people trapped in their own home. They were later rescued in stable condition.

In addition, thare have also been landslides between Naranjito and Jaris.

Gilberto Monge, Mayor of the Municipality of Mora, said the road between Jaris and Naranjito is greatly affected, so intervention has been needed.

According to Monge, one of the most affected routes has been the route 239, which connects Ciudad Colón and Puriscal.

There were landslides on the road and falling trees. CONAVI (National Roads Authority) has not properly cared for Route 239. I send messages to their engineers and they tell me they’re already working on that. We have a meeting with the Minister of Transport at the end of the month,”

said Monge.

The families who were evicted from Quebrada Honda are already in home rentals funded by the Joint Institute for Social Aid (IMAS), for 3 months. They also received financial assistance and food.

The municipality works together with transferees to find permanent housing solutions, provided they meet the requirements.
