Law that encourages the use of electric vehicles was ratified

December 14, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Legislative Assembly approved on Thursday in the second reading the law to encourage the use of electric vehicles in the country by exempting that technology from taxes.

The new regulations had 37 votes in favor. The only one who voted against was José Ramírez, from Frente Amplio.
According to the text, the tax benefit will only apply to 100% electric vehicles and zero emission technologies that do not contain a combustion engine. This includes modalities such as automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, minibuses, buses, trains and vehicles with specialized license plates.

The exonerations will have 5 years of validity from the publication of the law and with them the cost of electric vehicles could decrease up to 44%.

Electric vehicles will also be exempted from the property tax for a period of 5 years, from the payment of parking meters, from 100% of the ticket and will not be subject to vehicular restriction.

The initiative will now go to the Executive Power for its signature and publication in the official newspaper La Gaceta.
