Legislator asks the President to intervene INFOCOOP

February 9, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Legislator Francisco Camacho, from Frente Amplio, asked President Luis Guillermo Solís, to intervene the National Institute for Cooperative Development (INFOCOOP) and take corrective measures due to its current situation.

The request was made in a letter he sent to the President signed by other legislators.

According to Camacho, the request is due to a number of questions, such as why has Ronald Fonseca Vargas been an interim Executive Director, while the government has not reached a political agreement with the cooperative representatives to appoint a head Director.

In addition, the results of a recent audit by the Office of the Comptroller General revealed deficiencies in credits granted by the institution.

They also found gaps in the processes for granting and supervising cooperatives’ funding, aswell as mathematical errors in the formula used to calculate the equilibrium rate that determines whether credit is profitable or subsidized.

According to Camacho, this situation would have caused losses greater than ¢ 20 billion in the last five years.

Given this dilemma and in the framework of the major risks faced by the Organization, it is clear that within this context, the government should assert its authority and normalize the situation in the light of the preservation of the public welfare and the administrative health of the Institute,”

stated the letter.
