Legislators are against the Internet Fair Use policy

March 3, 2017 by Staff News Writer

21 legislators from different parties signed a letter requesting the Adminisitrative Council of the Telecommunications Superintendence (SUTEL) to suspend the Fair Use of the Internet policy.

In the document, they join the criteria of the Ombudsman, which said that slowing the speed of Internet browsing could violate human rights.

In the same document, the legislators remembered that, in the past, they have indicated SUTEL technical inconsistencies in the elaboration of its policies.

In addition, we request that any policy that changes the way citizens access the Internet is based on a deep national dialogue and with the participation of multiple sectors, not only one,

stated the officials.

The Fair Use policy, used since 2014 by Movistar and Claro and since March 1st by Kölbi, states that users who consume their Internet data, will have their navigation speed lower to 128 kilobytes per second (128 kbps).
