Legislators swear in magistrate despite intense demonstration

September 12, 2018 by Staff News Writer

A group of demonstrators protested against the tax reform outside the Legislative Assembly, while inside the legislators met to swear in Judge Julia Varela for the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice. She will be in the position for eight years, although she already has 16 years of being a judge.

It was at the beginning of the session when the official ceremony was held. Last Monday, her re-election was approved with 30 votes in favor and 22 against.

Varela failed to mention a resolution in which she favored former magistrate Celso Gamboa for an alleged lobby in favor of also magistrate Porfirio Sánchez to the Nominating Committee of the Legislative Assembly

She was the examining magistrate in that administrative case, that is, the one who coordinated and directed the investigation.

After the oath of office, the president of the Congress, Carolina Hidalgo, granted a 15-minute recess for the legislators to congratulate Varela.

At first, the possibility of holding the plenary session was questioned, however, after a series of consultations with the heads of the fractions, they decided to carry it out.

At some point, the legislators of the Treasury Affairs Committee were transferred to the Plenary for their protection due to the protest and violence unfolding outside the building.
