Liberia airport might have operational problems today

June 24, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Daniel Oduber International Airport, located in Liberia, could have operational problems as of June 24th, warned the Air Traffic Controllers Union (Sitecna). Delays are expected in the attention of flights and temporary suspension of operation.

Randall Vega, president of Sitecna, told CRHoy.com that since Friday the airport is only operating with six of the 12 controllers it had.

A year and a half ago, six employees were hired to work in the Information Center. However, they worjed as controllers. Despite this, their salary was still the one offered when they were hired.

Therefore, on June 21st, the six controllers decided to go to the positions for which they were hired. They will not return to controls until the administration hires and pays them as such.

During this weekend (Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June) the airport operated as normal because the other controllers maintained worked extra hours. But as of Monday there would not be enough staff to meet the demand.

At the beginning of this year, the air workers and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) reached a series of agreements, including paying extra hours for the workers of Liberia. However, the problems with the management of human resources persist and now the operation for next week is compromised.
