Long-acting reversible contraceptives are popular in Costa Rica

September 27, 2016 by Staff News Writer

In Costa Rica, more and more women are planning, but making a decision is not easy. In the market there are several options, such as the traditional birth control pills. However, Costa Rican women prefer long-acting reversible contraceptives, which have become a grear alternative.

However, before making a choice, women should visit a doctor to avoid making mistakes and to choose the best method. Gynecologist Kenneth Loaiciga declared that a specialist’s study can provide the safest and the most effective formula.

Loaiciga explained that over the years, as women have lost the fear of contraceptive use, they are planning without the supervision of a specialist, which can be a great mistake.

It is estimated that in the world, 6 out of 10 pregnancies are unplanned and there is still a huge amount of women who do not use them due to lack of sexual education. In recent years, long-term contraceptives have presented innovations in the family planning field.

For instance, a woman with a hormonal implant or an IUD can be pregnancy-free from 3 to 10 years.

The Intrauterine System, which is small, soft and with a “T” shape, must be placed by a medical specialist within the womb: it releases hormones in small amounts that make it difficult for spermatozoon to reach the egg. Its effectiveness is 99% and it is completely reversible.

In addition, the birth control implant is a device that is placed under the skin and continuously releases small doses of progestin, a hormone to prevent the ovaries from releasing eggs and it makes cervical mucus thicker, which difficults the movement of sperm into the uterus.
