MAG is fighting against the stable fly

August 24, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Authorities from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) have a coordinated approach to control the outbreak of the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) so neither banana, citrus and pineapple plantations nor the livestock production in Huetar Norte region, the Caribbean and Los Santos are affected.

This work is done with authorities from the State Phytosanitary Service (SFE), Animal Health Service (SENASA) and the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation and Technology Transfer (INTA).

From May, 2016 to date, complaints about the presence of “stable fly” in the Caribbean, Los Chiles and Los Santos were registered.

As consequence, authorities have made 130 monitoring visits, they have issued seven health orders, they have supplied insecticides, healing, tonics, vitamins, among others.

In addition, the institution has trained farmers on the proper management of crop waste, the correct identification of the pest, its biology, its behavior and fly control.

At the outbreak reported in Pavón in Los Chiles, authorities found inadequate management of stubble on two farms.

Preventive measures must be improved as the technicians are warning that the populations of adult fly will increase during October, November and part of December and to take no measures could worsen the situation.
