Major eruption from Turrialba Volcano

January 4, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Yesterday, Turrialba Volcano recorded a major eruption, which could be the most important of January 3rd.

From about 4:30 p.m. the colossus started a more intense emission of gas and ash and at around 5:50 p.m. the plume reached a height of 1,500 meters.

Ashfall is expected on the Central Valley, in the high parts of Oreamuno de Cartago, Coronado, Goicoechea, Moravia, Montes de Oca, Tibás, Heredia and Alajuela mountain area, due to the direction of the wind. The ash will also be present in Fincas La Silvia, La Picada and around Irazú Volcano.

Gino González, a volcanologist from the organization Volcanes Sin Fronteras, explained that this important emanation of ash is what causes a brown spot to appear in the sky.

Since December 28th, the volcano has considerably increased its activity,”

said the expert.

Due to the constant activity of the colossus, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) maintains a yellow alert in the cantons of Turrialba, Alvarado and Oreamuno.
