Marshal of the March for Diversity: “The most significant word is respect”

July 1, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Transgender actress Jimena Franco, marshal of the March for Diversity 2018, assured that they will keep proclaiming respect for the LGTBI community (Lesbians, Gais, Trans, Bisexuals, Intersexo) from Costa Rica.

Franco was designated as marshal this year by virtue of the role played in the national film Abrázame como Antes, by director Jurgen Ureña, where she played the role of Jimena, a transgender prostitute.

The most significant word is respect and I heard that, in other countries, if you do not like that, you can go for a walk, watch TV or read newspapers. Let us paint San José in colors. It should not be just today, it has to be every day, today is just a celebration day,”

said Franco.

At midday this Sunday the number of participants in the march was considerable. The plan was to leave at 12:00 p.m. from Paseo Colón towards Plaza de la Democracia.

We are very concerned about rejection, but also about the administrative silence of LGTBI people who come to request a service and the paperwork delays the processes forever. There is a double standard here, while the government is committed to equality there is a sector that has not yet understood that we are all human beings and we are all Costa Ricans,”

said Carlos Saenz, president of the Association of Social Workers.

According to Saenz, much progress has been made in recent years. However, more is always needed.

The fact that people is now able to access the pension of their partners or health insurance is a breakthrough, but we cannot keep it at that,”

concluded the union leader.
