Mayor and municipal president of Guácimo were suspended for six months

January 16, 2019 by Staff News Writer

On Tuesday, the Deputy Prosecutor of Pococí said the Criminal Court of Finance and Public Function imposed precautionary measures against the mayor Gerardo Fuentes and the Municipal President of Guácimo , Manrique Mejías Quirós.

The accused must sign once a month, have no contact with the witnesses of the case and will be suspended from their positions for six months, because they are suspected of the crimes of influence peddling against the Public Treasury, ideological falsehood and use of false documents.

A third accused, surnamed Barboza, who is an urban developer, was released without precautionary measures.

The facts investigated were reported on November 1st, when Barboza apparently requested a permit for potable water and sewerage service to the Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) of the Huetar Caribe Region, for an urban project.

This request was rejected for not meeting technical criteria. Therefore, Barboza allegedly transferred the property to a limited company to ask for the permit again.

According to the preliminary investigation, on October 31st of last year, Fuentes y Mejías talked to an official of the AyA to obtain the services requested by Barboza.

The three suspects were arrested on Monday during raids carried out in their homes.
