Mayor of Puntarenas will be suspended

December 12, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Chavarría Matarrita, Mayor of Puntarenas, was suspended for a period of at least six months and without salary. This was determined by the Criminal Court of Puntarenas, following the actions of the Prosecutor’s Office, which requested the suspension of Chavarría as a precautionary measure while he is being investigated as a suspect of the crimes of breach of duty and misappropriation of funds.

The facts that the Prosecutor’s Office investigates occurred from 2015 until December 3rd, the day on which the Public Prosecutor’s Office conducted a raid in different departments of the Municipality.

Apparently, Chavarría didn’t revoke the administration concession of the area’s spa, despite the fact that several state instances indicated that the company did not meet the necessary requirements.

It is presumed that, during the operation of the spa, the mayor turned funds to pay water and electricity bills of the company that was installed in the place.
